
Mariam Sharp: It’s Never Too Late To Change
The Click Start TechUPWomen course gave me the tools needed expand my digital skills
Meet Mariam, a vibrant 50-year-old Devon resident whose journey into the tech industry is nothing short of inspiring. With an appetite for learning and a thirst for digital innovation, Mariam embarked on the Click Start TechUPWomen programme at Durham University, embracing the flexible and remote learning opportunities it offered.
The pandemic forced Mariam to reconsider her career in the events industry. Despite her long-standing interest in mathematics, problem-solving, and digital advancement, she was unsure of how to pivot into the tech sphere, particularly at this stage in her career.
“I’ve always been interested in technology and digital innovation, but with a background in events, I was never quite sure how to break into the industry. The Click Start TechUPWomen course gave me the tools needed expand my digital skills flexibly during the pandemic and opened doors to a new career.“
Guided by the wisdom of tech industry mentors from Catch 22 she encountered through the Click Start programme, Mariam’s path became clearer. Her hard work blossomed as she clinched an internship with BJSS, a prominent UK tech consultancy, laying the groundwork for her future in the digital realm.
However, Mariam’s journey doesn’t end there. She mentors and empowers the next generation of women of colour in the digital landscape by volunteering with the Coding Black Females initiative.
